PERSONAL STATEMENT

Through conceptual photo composites I try to exemplify my deep love of story and mystery. I pull themes from fantasy, fairy tale, myth, and science fiction, combining scores of photo layers and effects to create images that tug at the archetypal within us: a glimpse of alchemy, a haunting melody, a half-remembered dream. Each work is a portal, sometimes leading into the gloaming, sometimes into the surreal and quirky, but my hope is to draw the viewer into a space where enigma, power, and magic are driving forces.

Photography has been my creative outlet since I picked up my first camera at the age of 5, but it wasn’t until I started learning Photoshop that the possibilities exploded for me. In the beginning, I used a combination of stock model images and my own photos, then moved into a phase of self-portraiture. Now I largely photograph my own models, allowing me to craft the images with clearer insight. I also make and collect costumes, and regularly haunt thrift shops for interesting props, to propel my work into new realms.

Welcome to my twilit sphere. Explore my galleries and meet my friends: fairies and valkyries, dragon-keepers and mystery-seekers. My work is for sale, and I can also be engaged to photograph you and create your own unique mythos. Contact me for inquiries.
BIOGRAPHY

Bethany was born in Massachusetts, USA. Attracted by photography at a young age, and due to a lack of youth photography classes, she taught herself through books. In college, she chose to major in Art History, but also took photography and fine art classes throughout her education. Additionally, she worked all four years in the campus darkroom as an assistant.

Bethany also taught herself to sew costumes starting around age 15. Her main focus was the Medieval and Renaissance periods, and she costumed several Shakespearian plays in her 20’s. Since that time, she has branched into more fantasy outfits to work with her shifting photo aesthetic. She has worked as a Technical Designer in the garment industry for 20 years, refining her skills in fitting clothing, draping and patterning, all of which she uses in her costuming.

First introduced to Adobe Photoshop in 2001, and using it merely as a tool for photo correction and slight manipulation, it wasn’t until 2016 that she formally learned Photoshop though online courses with her mentor Sebastian Michaels. Since that time, she has explored various styles of conceptual photo artistry, and often works with clients wishing to create one-of-a-kind fantastical imagery.

Bethany is a regularly published artist in the monthly magazine Living the Photo Artistic Life (and featured artist in the April 2020 issue here), and has won several Photoshop competitions. She was interviewed on Sebastian Michael's blog Quill and Camera (here). Her work can sometimes be seen in art galleries in North Carolina, where she is currently based. In addition to her rich artistic life, Bethany is also a dancer, archer, traveler, hiker, and foodie.
